When is the best time to floss?

Flossing is a crucial part of oral health and should be done daily to help prevent cavities and gum disease. But when is the best time? Should you floss before or after you brush your teeth?

As long as you floss daily and do a thorough job, it doesn’t matter when you floss. For example, you might prefer to carry floss in your purse or briefcase so you can floss after lunch. Others may want to floss before bed so they go to sleep with a fresh, clean mouth.

Don’t forget the kids – Your children should be flossing as well so plaque doesn’t start to harden around their teeth. “Start as soon as your child has two teeth that touch.” Many kids aren’t able to do a thorough enough job until around age 10 or 11.

While you shouldn’t be flossing too hard, you might experience some discomfort at first if you don’t floss regularly. With proper oral care, this should get better within 1-2 weeks.
