What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are unlike other similar restorative solutions, such as dental bridges and dentures. These titanium posts can mimic the function of natural tooth roots, delivering stimulation to the jawbone to reduce additional tooth loss and facial sagging. They are placed within the bone and fuse to surrounding tissues to create a solid anchor for your new smile.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

At Highland Oak Dental, you can remain confident when choosing to move forward with dental implants because of the attention to detail and incorporation of highly advanced technologies that Dr. Gadhiya uses. When discussing your upcoming treatment, there will be four steps you must take if you want your new smile to be a success:
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – You’ll need to meet with your implant dentist, Dr. Gadhiya, to go over your oral and overall health. Based on his findings as well as the density of your jawbone, you will either be cleared for dental implant surgery or require preliminary treatment to address an existing oral health problem.
- Dental Implant Surgery – No referrals are required, as Dr. Gadhiya will complete the surgical step of the dental implant process himself. After administering local anesthesia to numb your mouth, he will open areas of your gums to place each implant into its designated space. This will create a solid foundation for what will become your new smile.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – It is necessary for you to spend 4-6 months recovering after surgery, as osseointegration must occur. This is when your implants fuse with your jawbone. After this is complete, you will have your metal abutments attached to your implant posts to ensure your new restoration remains firmly in place.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Before you can begin to enjoy life with your new smile, we will need to secure it in place. This means that once we are satisfied with the look of your crown, bridge, or denture, we’ll connect it to your implant to create a longer-lasting set of teeth.
Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of dental implants are not to be overlooked. When comparing them to dental bridges or traditional dentures, you’ll find that not only can you live with your artificial implants for 30+ years, but you’ll also appreciate a stronger, nearly fully restored bite force. This allows you to eat all your favorite foods without worrying about your teeth shifting out of place. Not to mention, you’ll enjoy cost savings in the long run, as you won’t require the purchase of denture adhesive or regular replacements every few years.
Teeth in a Day & All-On-4 Dental Implants Available

The jawbone plays a vital role in dental implant placement, so if Dr. Gadhiya discovers that you lack the necessary jawbone density to adequately support your new implants, we can recommend Teeth in a Day and/or All-on-4 dental implants. Designed to provide faster results, we can pinpoint the densest areas of your jawbone so that your new titanium posts can be positioned for maximum strength and stability.

Dental Implant FAQs
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants can last for several decades, which is one of the many reasons they are widely loved by patients and dentists alike. The key to prolonging the lifespan of yours is proper care. That starts with a solid at-home oral hygiene regimen and extends to incorporating healthy habits into your routine, like wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Make sure to prioritize your biannual visits to our Frisco dental office, too! That way, we can continuously monitor their condition and intervene if something unexpected happens, like they become loose.
How Can I Tell If My Dental Implant Is Failing?
Does your dental implant feel loose? Are the gums surrounding it inflamed, red, or swollen? Do you feel a sharp, stabbing pain when you bite down? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you should schedule an emergency appointment with us right away. That way, we have the highest chances of being able to save it and prevent implant failure!
Am I Too Old to Get Dental Implants?
Although there is such a thing as being too young for dental implants, there isn’t an upper age limit. So, whether you’re 35, 55, or 75, you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with us if you’re struggling with tooth loss! At our office, we will review your medical history, take a look at your latest X-rays, complete a visual exam, and learn about your lifestyle to determine if this is the best tooth-replacement solution for you.
Will I Have to Take Off Work for Dental Implant Surgery?
Most patients take a day or two off of work so they can focus on recovering. Of course, if your job is physically demanding, then we may recommend dedicating a little more time off to prevent blood from diverting from the implant site. Ultimately, it depends on your unique situation, but we can provide you with our recommendation after we’ve solidified the details of your treatment plan.
Can I Get Dental Implants If I Smoke?
Usually, smoking is something that disqualifies a patient from getting dental implants in Frisco. That said, there are exceptions. The best thing to do is to schedule a consultation at our office so we can get an in-depth understanding of your dental history, needs, and goals. Once we have all of the information we need, we can determine if this is the best tooth-replacement solution for you, and, if it is, how long you will need to refrain from using tobacco products before and after the procedure.
Is There Anything I Shouldn’t Eat with Dental Implants?
Like your natural teeth, your dental implants can break with enough pressure. For that reason, we encourage our patients to avoid extremely crunchy foods (i.e., hard pretzels, raw almonds, peanut brittle) and not to chew on non-edible objects, like ice cubes. Instead, fill your plate with foods that are softer in consistency and packed with nutrients, like cottage cheese, cooked carrots, oatmeal, and plain yogurt.
