What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns or dental caps are a type of restoration that completely encircles the tooth or dental implant. We are happy to ofer high quality cosmetic treatments including the fabrication of excellent looking, longer lasting and extremely strong dental caps. If you have damaged crowns, our skilled experts can fabricate one for you. Dr. George DDS in Frisco, TX can easily place a tooth colored crown that lasts for years.

Types of crown (Tooth cap)

We offer three different types:

  • All-Metal

    – These are primarily made with metal alloys. It is the strongest type of crowns, but it lacks in aesthetics. Thus it is rarely used in the front and is mostly reserved for the restoration of the posterior ones, which is not typically visible.

  • All Porcelain

    – These have the best looks since it is prepared from tooth colored ceramics. Porcelain caps are recommended for patients that are extremely conscious about their looks.

  • Metal-Ceramic

    – These combine the benefit of metal and porcelain caps. It contains the framework of metallic alloys over the layer of porcelain where it will be attached. Highland Oak Dental also have different types available, based on their intended duration of use.

  • Permanent

    – These are used for permanently restoring crooked, or chipped teeth with one post. It is cemented into place with the use of dental adhesive. Only the dentist will be able to remove it when repairs are needed.

Procedure

Preparing for a dental crown will normally take two appointments. The first appointment will involve making the tooth and the second appointment will install your permanent crown. Here’s how it is done:

  1. On your first appointment, your dentist will take x-rays of your teeth to check the roots of the tooth that will get the crown and its surrounding bone. When there is extensive decay, injury or infection to the tooth pulp, your dentist will perform endodontic therapy first. If there is enough tooth to be saved, your dentist will simply get rid of the decayed part to perform crownlay, but not a full crown.
  2. The tooth and gum tissue surrounding the tooth will be numbed using anesthesia so you won’t feel pain when the dentist perform the next steps.
  3. Your dentist will prepare the tooth getting as much material of the tooth as possible to make sure the crown will fit. If the large area of the tooth is missing due to decay or damage, they will use a filling material to build-up the tooth and provide better support for the crown.
  4. They will then make a dental impression of the prepared tooth by using a putty or dental paste. Through modern CAD/CAM dentistry, they will use a digital scanner to create the impression of the teeth. These impressions are sent to the laboratory to be manufactured. You’ll then be required to wear a temporary crown until the permanent crown is finished. The manufacturing of the crown will take from one to three weeks.

On your next visit, your dentist will remove the temporary crown then check the fit and color of the permanent crown. If the crowns match the color of your smile, you will then be injected with anesthesia to numb the tooth and safely put the new crown in your teeth. Learn more about diastema smile.

Aftercare

After the crown has been finalized and cemented in place, it is important to watch what you are eating. Wait at least an hour to eat, but avoid hard or sticky foods for at least a few hours. You will resume your normal oral health routine as directed by your specialist, but brushing and flossing can usually be performed soon after the procedure.

How much is a porcelain crown?

Porcelain crowns typically cost between $800 - $3,000 per tooth. These can be affordable as Dental insurance does help pay for Crowns.

Lifespan and repair

Unlike a veneer, a crown can last over seven years, and if they are properly maintained, may even last a lifetime. However, there is a possibility of the dental cement underneath getting dissolved, leaving it loose. If this happens, it may ultimately come off. If it comes off, the patient must not force it back on, because it may hold traces of cement inside and damage the tooth. Porcelain can crack, and will need to be fused if so. Repair can be performed at the dental laboratory in certain cases. If you have damaged yours, contact our office immediately, and we will get it repaired for you. If it is so severely damaged that it cannot be repaired, we will just replace it with a new one.

FAQs

How long do dental crowns last?

The average lifespan of crowns can last for up to 15 years. High quality crowns can last for more than 25 years with proper care and maintenance. Highland Oak Dental produces high quality crowns.

Is it painful to have a crown put on your tooth?

No. The treatment is pain free. A local anesthetic will be administered by Dr. Shiney George, DDS before filling the cavity or placing it with a crown. Expect to feel soreness or discomfort after the local anesthetic wears off, which can take within a day or two.

Can your teeth rot under a crown?

Yes. It is possible for the teeth to decay under a crown particularly if the patient is not practicing proper oral hygiene. Dental crowns protect the weak teeth and if the bacteria is allowed to grow under the gums and other teeth, the bacteria will turn into plaque, then tartar and then it will eventually cause tooth decay. If patients do not visit their dentist regularly, they won’t notice the tooth rotting under the crown until it’s too late. Learn more about dental crowns by visiting Highland Oak Dental office.
